No longer is breast cancer a death sentence for women. No longer do
women have to necessarily lose a breast to the disease. New treatments
and improved methods of detection have made survival rates for the
disease nearly 90 percent.
Another explanation for the increased survival rates has to do with
breast cancer awareness. As more women became educated about the
symptoms, detection, treatments and possible prevention of the disease,
breast cancer awareness grew. Education efforts to get women to
undergo yearly mammograms also helped the survival rate by catching the
