The Jewel Of South India

Chennai - the jewel of South India serves as the capital of Tamil Nadu and is also the fourth largest city of India. Its foundation dates back to the year 1639 when the British East India Company was granted land to build a trading settlement by the local ruler (Nayak) of the suburb of Vandavasi, Damerla Venkatapathy Nayak. The land grant day (Aug 22nd) is today celebrated every year as Madras Day. It is great to know about Chennai that it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. A very interesting fact about Chennai is that the ‘Corporation of Chennai’ which governs Chennai; it is not only the oldest municipal corporation in India, but also in any Commonwealth nation outside the UK.
